Meta Descriptions

SEO Moz has an excellent page devoted to meta descriptions and their usefulness, but a good summary is:

Meta description tags, while not important to search engine rankings, are extremely important in gaining user click-through from search engine result pages (SERPs). These short paragraphs are webmasters opportunity to advertise content to searchers and let them know exactly what the given page has with regard to what they’re looking for.

Note: by default, Google will automatically pull text from your webpage to display as its meta description. Sometimes this is ‘good enough’, but when it isn’t we offer two ways to customize the meta descriptions on your website using the UF&Shands website theme:

Option 1 – Homepage Meta Descriptions

This is the description users will see when your website’s homepage appears in search engine results. For example, if I search for “UF Web Services”, I would see the following [view image]

…see the highlighted text for the first result? That’s the meta description we have set for our homepage.

To customize this description:

  1. Visit Appearance / Theme Options / General
  2. Write a brief (1-2 sentences) description of your website in the ‘Site Description‘ field [view image]
  3. Select ‘Save Options’

Option 2 – Per Page/Post Meta Descriptions

Each individual page/post in your website can have its own meta description.

To customize this description:
