Accessibility Updates for Apollo 2 sites
 |
The Apollo 2 Theme received an update to the underlying HTML code to further improve accessibility for website visitors using assistive technologies to access websites on our WordPress network. These updates apply to all sites automatically. These updates are based on a report from an accessibility tool used by the Florida Department of Education which identified some issues Web Services could address for all sites. Some issues our website admins and editors can address at their own speed, and a link to an accessibility tutorial is present at the bottom of this article. Below is a list of the updates on these rules: - Complementary landmark: must be top level
- Link text must describe the link target
- Headings nested in landmarks
- Role must have parent
- Role is not allowed
- Widget labels must be descriptive
- Form controls must have labels
- `role` must be valid
- Widgets must have label
As a website Admin or Editor, you can take some steps to make sure you part in accessible content is covered by following the guidelines laid out in this Accessibility Tutorial. Please contact us with any questions about best practices in content strategy and accessibility at any time!

New calendaring platform in development
A new calendar platform will soon be rolling out for Apollo 2.0 users. Built in-house by UF Health Web Services, the new calendar platform will seamlessly integrate into your website and help you promote events. Features of this new system include: - Promote department-led opportunities for collaboration, research, and education.
- Feed your events to your website and view an overall view of the calendar and each event on your website's template as if it's part of the site.
- Assign access to specific persons in your department to manage a calendar and sub-calendars without the need for access to the website.
- Add and easily manage stand-alone events and reoccurring events.
- Add rich content, such as an agenda for a conference.
More information on this feature will be released in the coming months when development and testing have concluded!

What are your website goals?
Do you have goals in mind for your website? Having goals in mind will help your website remain focused and stay more organized. What would a goal for a website look like? A few examples of common website goals are: - to inform prospective applicants about the requirements of a program
- to promote research done in a specific field by members of a lab.
When you receive a request to make an update to a site or are asked to create a new page of information, use your website's goals to help guide you on where to place and organize the new content.

Private Information on your website
The importance of keeping private information off a website in any form cannot be overstated. This includes uploading documents that may contain personal information such as a home address, phone number, and background information on the individual or yourself. Search engines are adept at scanning websites and creating records of the information on them very quickly and efficiently. This means that a quick uploading of a CV to a website for a day or two could result in a search engine result should that person look for information on themselves. Before uploading any document about someone, you should stop first and ask yourself if this is ok according to the training you've taken in the past. If you are unsure, it's best to reach out to the UF or Shands Privacy Offices, or Web Services first. Removing a search engine result isn't a quick and simple task. Courses on FERPA and HIPAA are available on MyTraining for a refresher at any time. Links to the specific courses are below:
